Zephyrhills, FL : 16-year-old boy killed and four other people injured in a three-vehicle crash on U.S. 301 in Zephyrhills on Wednesday morning, March 18, 2015

A St. Petersburg High School student was killed and three other people were seriously injured Wednesday morning in a three-vehicle crash on U.S. 301 in Zephyrhills.

Kelmy Tanon, 16, a passenger in one of the vehicles, died at the scene. He was not wearing a seat belt, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

St. Petersburg High officials said parents were informed of the fatal crash by a robo call Wednesday afternoon and a crisis team will be at the school Thursday morning.
Students at St. Pete High School said Tanon, a sophomore, was popular on campus.

“He was a nice kid, he was pretty funny, always in a good mood,” said Eddi Bradley, a student. “It’s really sad that another family has to go to bed this upset because they lost such a dear family member at such a young age.”

A crisis team will be on campus Thursday morning.

School records show the teen's last name spelled with two "Ns," but the boy's Facebook page and the crash report have the name spelled Tanon. His home address is in Zephyrhills.
According to troopers, William Kent Jr., 32, of Dover was driving a Ford pickup truck north on U.S. 301 when he slowed to turn into 2738 Gall Blvd. He was then rear-ended by 67-year-old Julian Tanner of Plant City, who was driving a Chevrolet pickup truck.

Kent's truck ended up in the path of a southbound 2005 Pontiac Vibe, driven by Zuleika Gonzalez-Tiernan, 39, of Zephyrhills. The truck collided with the Vibe, then hit a wooden power pole and a large rock.

Troopers said the Vibe spun off the road and landed in a ditch on the west shoulder of U.S. 301. Tanon was in the left rear seat of the Vibe.
Tanner, Gonzalez-Tiernan, and 9-year-old Isaiah Gonzalez, who was in the front seat of the Vibe, were taken to Lakeland Regional Medical Center with serious injuries. Kent was taken to Florida Hospital Zephyrhills with minor injuries.
U.S. 301 was closed for three hours while crews worked to repair the power lines.

The FHP said fog was light and was not a factor in the crash. An investigation will continue.
