SAN MARCOS, TX : Seguin woman killed in fatal wreck on 123 on Wednesday, July 12, 2017
A Seguin woman was killed and her brother injured in a single vehicle crash in San Marcos on Wednesday.
Officers say 26-year-old Cassandra Baldera was fatally injured and her brother, 18-year-old Eric Baldera received non-life threatening injuries in the wreck, which was reported about 11:18 a.m. in the 1900 block of State Highway 123, according to a news release from the San Marcos Police Department.
Police say the pair were injured when the 2005 Chevrolet Malibu they were traveling in allegedly began to leave the road and crashed into a metal utility pole.
“Based on preliminary evidence and witness accounts, investigators believe the vehicle, a black 2005 Chevrolet Malibu, driven by Mr. Baldera, was traveling southbound on Hwy. 123 when it began drifting to the left,” the release said. “The vehicle crossed the opposing lanes of traffic just prior to the new Hwy. 123/Wonder World overpass, entered the ditch and traveled through a barbed wire fence before colliding with a large metal utility pole.”
San Marcos/Hays County Fire and EMS responded to the scene and began treating Cassandra Baldera, who sustained life threatening injuries, the release said.
“Life saving measures were attempted, and she was transported by San Marcos/Hays County EMS to Central Texas Medical Center in San Marcos,” it said. “She succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced deceased by Justice of the Peace Joann Prado at 1 p.m.”
Officers believe Cassandra Baldera was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, the release said.
San Marcos/Hays County EMS also treated Eric Baldera and transported him to St. David’s South Austin Hospital, the release said.
The crash remains under investigation by the San Marcos Police Department’s Collision Investigation Team.
