Knoxville, TN : Fatal motorcycle crash on 'The Dragon' discovered day later on Monday, 17th October 2016
The Tennessee Highway Patrol on Monday said a fatal crash involving two motorcycles on the "The Dragon" was discovered Sunday, a day after the mishap.
A passerby found the motorcycles about 1 p.m. Sunday, according to a report by Trooper Bryan Martin. The crash occurred about 10 a.m. Saturday, according to the report.
Phillip Paul Polito, 29, of Perryville, Mo., was killed when his 2016 Victory Cruiser motorcycle collided with 2015 BMW touring motorcycle driven by Kevin Lee Diepenbrock, 41, of Greenville, Texas, who was listed in critical condition Monday at the University of Tennessee Medical Center.
The accident occurred on U.S. Highway 129 near mile marker 4. The stretch of highway near the Tennessee-North Carolina line is known as "The Dragon," because of dangerous curves and scene views. It has 318 turns in the 11-mile stretch.
Both motorcycles were traveling southbound when Polito braked, according to Martin's report. Diepenbrock attempted to brake and struck Polito's motorcycle in the rear, causing both to go off the right side of the roadway and down an embankment.
Both riders were wearing helmets, and routine drug and alcohol tests were requested. No citations or charges were issued.
