Sacramento, CA : An 83-year-old driver and his passenger died on Tuesday, June 27, 2017
An 83-year-old driver and his passenger died after their car was struck head-on by a pickup on Lilac Road in Valley Center Tuesday, the California Highway Patrol said.
The truck driver, suspected of being under the influence of drugs, crossed over double yellow lines and into on-coming traffic near Hideaway Lake Road, CHP officials said. Her pickup, a 2007 Ford Explorer Sport Trac, struck a Mercedes E300 traveling east about 1:10 p.m.
The Mercedes driver, of Valley Center, and his passenger, an 81-year-old woman who lived in Oceanside, died before they could be taken to a hospital, officials said. Their names were not released.
The pickup driver, a 27-year-old woman of Escondido, was airlifted to a hospital with serious injuries. She was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs, officials said.
About 15 to 20 gallons of chlorine, for swimming pools, spilled from the Explorer onto the road, CHP Officer Mary Bailey said.
Lilac Road was closed between Old Castle Road and Valley Center Road during the investigation. The road re-opened about 6:15 p.m.
