Daytona Beach, FL : Ice cream shop robbery suspect crashes after carjacking a man and his father in Daytona Beach late Monday afternoon on April 28th 2014
Police said they arrested an armed robbery suspect who crashed after carjacking a man and his father in Daytona Beach late Monday afternoon.
According to Daytona Beach Police Chief Mike Chitwood, the incident started with a robbery to an ice cream store on Mason Avenue and followed with a carjacking.
"The bad guy runs up, points a gun and threatens to kill both if he didn't get in the car," Chitwood said.
The alleged robber, identified as Johnny Quatto, confronted a man and his adult son as they were leaving a nearby orthopedics office.
"He came up screaming and he wanted me to drive him," carjacking victim Matthew Taylor said.
Taylor said his son got out of the vehicle, Quatto jumped in and they began driving before Taylor was able to escape.
"I pulled the emergency break and jumped out," Taylor said.
The suspect then got into the driver's seat and took off, police said. At the same time, officers who were responding to the robbery arrived in the area.
"The bad guy heads down Vine, loses control and wraps the car around a tree and had to be extricated," Chitwood said.
Quatto suffered serious injuries in the crash and was taken to Halifax Hospital for treatment. He's being charged with armed carjacking and armed robbery.
Taylor said he's just fortunate he and his son got out of the car before the crash.
