Sandy, UT : Two people injured in motorcycle crash on U.S. 26 near Sandy sends on Wednesday morning September 23 2015
Two men were rushed to the hospital Wednesday after their motorcycles crashed into a cable barrier on U.S. 26 east of Sandy, shutting down the highway in both directions until at least late morning.
One man was taken by helicopter ambulance to Legacy Emanuel Medical Center. The other was transported to Emanuel by ground ambulance. Their names and conditions are not yet available.
Both were trauma injuries," said Chief Mic Eby of the Hoodland Fire District. "Both are entering the trauma system."
The crash occurred at 7:57 a.m. near Milepost 32. Eby said witnesses told firefighters that the motorcyclists were headed east when they changed lanes, left the roadway and hit the cable barrier.
Hoodland firefighters called for a Life Flight helicopter ambulance to take the more seriously injured man. An American Medical Response ambulance took the other man.
Eby said the motorcycles were destroyed when they hit the barrier.
There is so much debris spread all over the road," Eby said. "It's hard to believe there was that much stuff on two motorcycles."
Oregon State Police are investigating the crash.Meanwhile, state highway officials have established a detour, diverting traffic in both directions to Cherryville Drive. Oregon Department of Transportation officials said U.S. 26 may remain closed until at last 11:30 a.m. while crews collect debris from the roadway.
