One driver suffered life-threatening injuries and two adults and a small child were also hurt Monday afternoon in a violent head-on collision on Route 2, according to Massachusetts State Police.
The accident happened just before 2 p.m. at the 78.4 mile marker of Route 2, police said.
According top preliminary reports, a Toyota Camry heading eastbound crossed over the center line and crashed into another vehicle, a Honda CRV.
According to state police, the driver of Toyota was ejected from the vehicle the vehicle after the crash. Police described his injuries as life-threatening.
He was transported by a Life Flight helicopter ambulance to UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester.
Three occupants of the Honda, two adults and a toddler, were taken by ambulance to Heywood Hospital in Gardner. Reports on their conditions were not available.
Police did not disclose the names of any of the injured.
The accident caused the eastbound lane of Route 2 to be closed to traffic for more than two hours as police investigated the accident and firefighters aided the injured.
Traffic was being diverted at exit 18 onto Route 2A. The closure caused a significant backup in traffic, police said.
The accident is being investigated by two state police units, Crime Scene Services and Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section.
