Hayward, CA : One person was injured when a speeding car collided with a light pole and burst into flames on Sunday, July 19th, 2015
Investigators were working to clear a blocked eastbound lane of the Hayward-San Mateo bridge in heavy traffic Sunday afternoon after at least one person was injured when a speeding car collided with a light pole and burst into flames.
Just before 3 p.m., witnesses saw a black Chevrolet Corvette speeding in and out of Highway 92's eastbound traffic lanes on the bridge, according to California Highway Patrol Officer Amelia Jack.
Moments later, witness reports of a collision and fire came in. Officers responded by issuing a Sig-alert for the closed No. 3 lane at 3:19 p.m. and found a 31-year-old San Jose man, who told officers he had been eastbound in the No. 1 lane when his car struck a patch of sand and lost control. The Corvette then struck the right shoulder wall, rode up onto its edge and slid along it, striking and downing a light pole before coming to a stop. Passers-by stopped and helped the man get out, and he was taken to Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley with moderate injuries and burns, Jack said.
Power was shut off to the pole, and investigators were waiting on PG&E crews to remove the pole from the blocked No. 3 lane. At least one fire department came to put out the resulting fire, Jack said. Eastbound traffic in the Nos. 1 and 2 lanes is heavy, and the No. 3 lane may be blocked until 5:30 p.m., Officer Jack said. Check back for updates.
