A 74-year-old Hamblen County motorcyclist died Friday afternoon in a one vehicle crash on Highway 160, south of the intersection with Interstate 81, according to the Morristown Police Department.
Robert “Joe” Smoot, who lived on Stapleton Road, was southbound on a 2002 Harley-Davidson around 2:40 p.m. when he rode into the median and collided with a guard rail just north of a railroad bridge, according to MPD Cpl. Kenneth Hinkle, a crash reconstructionist.
Smoot had a diagnosed medical condition that Hinkle believes was a factor in the fatal crash, according to Hinkle, who said both Smoot’s bike and head collided with the guard rail. Smoot was wearing a helmet.
