Johnston County, N.C : Clayton woman dead, Apex man charged in a fatal crash on NC 42 in Johnston County on Sunday afternoon, April 19, 2015

The State Highway Patrol says an Apex man has been charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle in connection with a fatal crash on NC 42 in Johnston County that killed a Clayton woman Sunday afternoon.

The victim was identified as Stefanie McCartney, 33. Her daughter was also injured in the crash and was taken to WakeMed for treatment.

Trooper J.R. Alexander reports the crash happened when the driver of an eastbound pickup truck towing a utility trailer lost control after passing several vehicles and trying to merge back into the eastbound lane. The pickup hit the guardrail of the westbound lane and skidded sideways into the path of the car driven by McCartney.

The driver of the pickup was identified as Robert G. Dees of Apex. He was taken to WakeMed with severe but non-life threatening injuries.

A third vehicle, a Tahoe driven by Clyde Castleberry, was hit by the trailer being towed by the pickup. Castleberry was not injured in the accident, nor were the other passengers in his SUV.

Dees was charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle and careless and reckless driving.
