One man is dead and 11 people were injured in a multiple-vehicle crash Saturday afternoon near Congress Parkway and Wells Street, officials said.
The accident happened around 4:30 p.m. and Chicago police said eight cars collided. Chicago Police Department spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said, citing preliminary information, that a motorist appeared to have lost control of a vehicle before it crashed into others near Congress and Wells.
The Cook County medical examiner’s office identified the man killed as Darius C. Sconiers, 35, of the 3000 block of Adams Street in Bellwood. He was pronounced dead at 4:54 p.m.
Chicago Fire Department officials said four adults were taken in critical-to-serious condition and three in good condition to Stroger Hospital. Three people in critical-to-serious condition were taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, and two adults in fair-to-serious condition were taken to Rush University Hospital.
Fire Department officials said others refused treatment at the scene, and roadways around the crash were closed to traffic.
Illinois State Police were investigating and said one person had died from injuries suffered in the crash.
