Logan Canyon, UT : Teen injured in motorcycle crash on U.S. 89 near Zanavoo on Wednesday, June 22, 2016

A 17-year-old motorcyclist from Richmond was seriously injured in Logan Canyon Wednesday when he crashed into the back of a PT Cruiser.

The Utah Highway Patrol initially reported the motorcycle had just moved into the left lane on U.S. 89 near Zanavoo, crashing into a slower-moving vehicle also in the left lane. However, as they interviewed more people, they learned more about the events immediately preceding the crash.

Witnesses told troopers that as soon as the northbound travel lanes changed from one lane to two lanes, a yellow Mustang moved into the right travel lane just as the rider of the bullet bike behind him “gunned it” in an effort to move around the car.

The teen on the motorcycle reportedly maneuvered back to the left, where he quickly approached the PT Cruiser, also in the left lane.

Brenchley said the woman driving the Cruiser, who was moving at about 35 miles per hour, told troopers she could hear the motorcycle rapidly approaching behind her so she quickly moved to the right in an effort to get out of his way.

However, the motorcyclist simultaneously moved to the right in an attempt to go around her but was unable to avoid a collision.

The motorcycle speed was estimated to be about 50 miles per hour at the time of impact, Brenchley said.

Prior to the crash, additional witnesses said the motorcyclist was weaving in and out through traffic at speeds between 60 and 80 miles per hour.

The motorcyclist, who was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, was unconscious for a brief period of time, and semiconscious by the time emergency personnel arrived on scene. Responders were paged out at about 2:40 p.m.

Brenchley said an off-duty North Park Police officer and her boyfriend, who is reportedly an EMT in Weber County, were passing through the area when the crash occurred. They stopped to tend to the patient and assisted with traffic control until emergency personnel arrived on scene, he said.

The patient was transported to Logan Regional Hospital.

The crash blocked the two inside lanes of U.S. 89 while police tended to the patient and investigated the crash.

The investigating trooper cited him for reckless driving.
