Upper Marlboro, MD : 61-year-old women was dead after she was struck by a pickup truck along Route 210 on early Monday morning October 27th 2014
Prince George’s County Police say just after 5 a.m. Monday, a pickup truck struck and killed Lucia Amaya as the 61-year-old walked along Route 210/Indian Head Highway near Berry Road.
The driver stayed at the scene. Police say Amaya was not in a crosswalk.
Neighbor Bryan Musgrave said, “210 is a busy highway. People are always flying up and down. It was 5:30 in the morning, so it’s dark. You never know what happened. It’s just sad.”
The accident happened not far from Amaya’s home in Accokeek, which is now surrounded by ribbons, a fitting tribute to a beloved figure.
“When I tell you that was the most devastating news that I have ever heard … I wouldn’t wish that on anybody,” said close friend Jennifer Donald.
Donald said she prayed with Amaya at church on Sunday. She says her friend was well-known for two things: her wonderful disposition and her love of walking.
“There wasn’t a time when you wouldn’t see Lucia walking around. She was an avid walker; she just liked to walk,” Donald said.
Friends say Amaya walked for miles along the busy Route 210 every day, so she could get to her favorite places, including Dunkin Donuts. Employees there say they are mourning as if a family member is gone; they called her their grandmother.
“The kids loved her, the neighborhood loved her, and we are going to suffer a tremendous loss,” Donald said. “I told my husband I don’t know what I’m going to do now, because I’m going to expect her to knock on my door and she’s not going to be there.”
