Jackson, TN : Child killed, 4 injured in Haywood Co. crash on Sunday, 2nd October 2016

A child was killed and four people injured in a single car crash Sunday afternoon in Haywood County.

Skylar Martin, 11, was killed in the crash, according to the Tennessee Highway Patrol. The 11-year-old is from Alamo, according to the report.

According to the Highway Patrol, Skylar was not wearing a seat belt.

The driver, Rita Benson, 51, was injured. She was wearing a seat belt, according to the report.

Seth Martin, 14, Shawn Martin, 7, and McKenzie Crutchfield, 10, were also injured. Seth wore a seat belt while McKenzie did not, according to the report. Whether or not Shawn had a seat belt on is listed as unknown.

The 2006 Buick was driving on State Highway 19 near the intersection with Woodlawn Road. When it left the roadway around 12:30 p.m., Benson overcorrected, causing the car to overturn multiple times and land in a ditch, according to the Highway Patrol’s report.

Safety restraints would have made a difference in the accident, according to the report, and criminal charges are pending.
