Charlton,MA : Charlton bike crash victim was teacher, former principal in Dudley-Charlton on September, Friday 15th 2017
Colleagues are remembering educator John Paire, who died Friday in a bicycle accident on Route 20, as “one of the truly great people” in the Dudley-Charlton Regional School District.
“John was one of the true champions of the ‘students first’ philosophy that permeates our district,” District Superintendent Gregg J. Desto wrote in a statement to families on Saturday.
“I can tell you with 100 percent certainty that he loved our students, and that he would do anything to help them succeed ... He was the rare leader who cared about people for more than their role within the school. He cared about them as people, he cared about their families, and he made decisions with compassion, sincerity and commitment to his core beliefs.”
Police and paramedics responded to Route 20 westbound, near South Sturbridge Road, at about 3:30 p.m. Friday on the report of a bicycle and car crash. Mr. Paire, the bicyclist, was pronounced dead at the scene.
A 54-year-old Wilbraham man driving a 1997 Audi A4 sedan collided with the bicyclist. The driver immediately stopped at the scene, according to state police.
Trooper Robert Ryan’s preliminary investigation indicated that the bicyclist came out of a side street before being struck. The crash remains under investigation by state police. Westbound traffic was rerouted onto Route 169 for several hours.
Mr. Paire, 40, of Charlton, was a teacher in the Dudley-Charlton Regional School District, having shifted to the classroom at Charlton Middle School after three years as principal of Dudley Middle School.
He began his career in 2003 as a teacher at Bartlett Junior-Senior High School in Webster, which he left in January 2008 to become interim assistant principal at Burgess Elementary in Sturbridge. A few months later, he was hired as assistant principal at Dudley Middle School.
