Tooele, UT : Drowsy driving, no seat belt leads to deadly crash on Wednesday June 18, 2015 at Tooele County
Police say drowsy driving and not wearing a seat belt contributed to the death of a man in a rollover crash on I-80 early Wednesday.
The man, who has not yet been identified, was driving back from Wendover with friends when the accident occurred shortly before 7 a.m., Utah Highway Patrol trooper Evan Kirby said. The man was lying down asleep in the back seat of one car while the rest of the group followed in a second vehicle.
The man was killed when the driver dozed off and began to drift, Kirby said. The driver then overcorrected, taking the car back over a barrier and into eastbound traffic. The driver was wearing a seat belt and received minor injuries.
Members of the man's family who were driving behind the car witnessed the crash, Kirby said.
"His family was following, they obviously saw him after the crash," Kirby said. "It was very traumatic on them, a very emotional scene today."
The crash caused delays on both directions of I-80 as police investigated the crash. Lane restrictions were lifted after crews removed the man's body from the vehicle about 10 a.m.
"We just really need people to buckle up. It's really simple, really easy, and we can avoid tragedies like this," Kirby said.
