DARIEN, GA : Worn motorcycle tire caused fatal crash in McIntosh County, state patrol says on Monday, March 20th 2017
A worn rear tire caused a motorcycle crash Friday in McIntosh County, killing a South Carolina man, the Georgia State Patrol said in a report Monday.
David Thomas Hubbard Jr., 42, was traveling south on Interstate 95 north of Darien about 2:45 p.m. when he lost control of his 1998 Yamaha motorcycle and laid it over on its side, Sgt. William West said in his report. The motorcycle skidded 160 feet before it hit a guardrail in the median throwing Hubbard who then struck the guardrail and suffered fatal injuries, West said.
Witnesses said the rear tire began wobbling just before the motorcycle went out of control, the report said.
West said the accident resulted from the failure of the tire which was worn to the point of having no tread.
Hubbard was wearing a plastic novelty helmet that was not approved by the U.S. Department of Transportation, West wrote in his report.
States with helmet laws require that they have the DOT stamp indicating they are road safe.
