Smyrna ,GA : 29- Years old Emily Wilkerson killedand anoher person injured after being hit by car and third car slammed into them.on Friday ,March 13th 2015

Three families are coping with a tragedy after a crash killed a young woman who had stopped on the side of the road in Smyrna.

The crash also badly injured the young man who had stopped to help her.

"I believe they ran out of fuel or had some sort of vehicle problem and stopped on the right shoulder of the road," said Sgt. Bobby Gibson with Smyrna police.

A man who saw the two women standing by their car stopped to help. That's when a third car slammed into them.

"The driver of the Impala was outside her car and she did die in the crash," Gibson said. "The man who stopped to help suffered some injuries."

Emily Wilkerson, 29, of Mt. Juliet was killed. Brandon Hight, 23, the man who stopped to help, was hurt.

Jamitria Patton, 20, was driving the vehicle that hit them. Patton was also injured and transported to a hospital for treatment.

Gibson said these kinds of roadside crashes are becoming all too common. He said while many involve police or first responders getting hit while trying to help, they are willing to put their lives on the line to help protect people in need.

"You're putting yourself at risk getting out of your car," Gibson said. "In this particular situation, there wasn't a shoulder for them to pull off of. And of course, if you're vehicle runs out of gas, you're pretty much at the mercy of where your car stops."

Gibson said if this happens to you and you feel like you're not in a safe place to wait for help, just walk away from your car, call police and wait for them to help.

Even if you're in a wreck, getting police to the scene could help save a life.

Smyrna police are still investigating the crash. No charges have been filed at this point.
