Augusta, ME : Four people injured after a single-car crash on Bond Brook Road on Saturday, August 27, 2016
A single-car crash about noon Saturday on Bond Brook Road sent four people to hospitals with injuries.
Augusta police Sgt. Christian Behr said Jacob Thomas, 25, of Augusta, who was a passenger in the vehicle, was flown by LifeFlight to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston with severe injuries.
A nursing supervisor there said she had no information about him as of 4 p.m. Saturday.
The others went by ambulance or other vehicles to MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta.
Behr said the car, a 2001 Hyundai, was heading west when it went off the road along a series of curves near the Interstate 95 overpass. Bond Brook Road connects Mount Vernon Avenue with Leighton Road.
He said the vehicle crossed the center line, went down an embankment, flew into some trees and crashed down, landing with the front of the car facing the road.
Augusta police, fire and rescue personnel were working at the scene and closed the two-lane road to traffic for a couple of hours. Behr said the passenger door had to be cut from the car in order to get the passengers out.
Behr also said Maine State Police were reconstructing the accident in order to help determine its cause.
A second passenger, Miranda Gurtowski, 34, of Augusta was being treated at MaineGeneral.
A 5-year-old girl, who was secured in a safety seat, appeared to have lesser injuries, Behr said, as did the driver, Benjamin Mackenzie, 34, also of Augusta. The two also were taken to the Augusta hospital.
A MaineGeneral spokeswoman said the three victims taken there were treated and released.
Behr said Mackenzie, who is originally from the Augusta area, had lived in Maryland before returning here, which is why the vehicle had Maryland license plates.
