Honea Path, S.C : At least one dead after car crashes into house Anderson County Saturday afternoon on July 19, 2014
Honea Path, South Carolina
The driver of a pick-up truck died after crashing into a mobile home in Anderson County Saturday afternoon.
The accident happened on Due West Road near Joe Bell Road shortly after 1 p.m.
Firefighters with the Craytonville Fire Department said the pick-up truck slammed into the mobile home with so much force that it knocked the trailer off its foundation, trapping homeowner, Doreen Howe inside when she was unable to open the doors to the home.
"I heard this rumble and before I knew it I just put my laptop down and I had seen what had happened," said Howe.
Howe was referring to the hole the truck left in her home.
Anderson County Coroner Greg Shore said the driver of the truck, Adam Payton, 23, of Bill Kay Road, Belton, lost control of the vehicle around a curve, ran off the road and hit the mobile home.
Shore said Payton died at the scene from blunt force trauma.
Shore said Payton's body was burned when a fire erupted inside the vehicle following the crash.
"I can rebuild. I can put another trailer up there. But that young man lost his life, and I'm truly sorry for what happened," said Howe.
Speed was a factor in the crash, Shore said.
A male passenger, 19, was not hurt in the crash, Shore said.
The Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
