WASHINGTON COUNTY, Oregon
Two horses died after they were struck by a car on Oregon 47 in western Washington County, according to Oregon State Police.
Just after 9:50 p.m., a woman was driving a 2013 Hyundai Sonata north on the highway when she struck the two animals, said Lt. Gregg Hastings, a state police spokesman. The horses had been walking freely along the highway, about three miles north of U.S. 26.
One of the horses died at the scene upon impact, Hastings said. The other was seriously injured. A veterinarian, who responded to the scene, euthanized the second animal at its owner's request.
Hastings did not know how the horses made it to the highway.
The driver, whose name has not been released, suffered a minor hand injury. Her vehicle was significantly damaged.
The incident blocked a lane of traffic on the highway for about two hours.
