A man was killed and a state trooper from Van Buren critically injured in a car accident Monday morning on Interstate 40 in Alma.
Trooper First Class Roy Moomey, 41, was injured in the crash that happened at about 3:35 a.m. on Monday at the 8 mile marker on I-40 near the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department Weight Station at Alma, according to a press release from the Arkansas State Police.
Matthew Choate, 24, of Fort Smith was killed in the crash, according to the ASP.
According to police, Moomey tried to block Choate’s vehicle as it was heading the wrong way on the interstate and their vehicles collided.
Moomey was trapped inside his vehicle for nearly an hour, the ASP said. He was taken by ambulance to an area hospital after first responders freed him with a hydraulic rescue tool.
According to a Facebook post on Monday by Crawford County Prosecutor Marc McCune, Moomey was in “critical but stable condition” after the accident.
Moomey was “hit head on by a drunk driver,” McCune wrote in the post.
“Roy put his life on the line to save others on the interstate,” McCune wrote.
Moomey was dispatched to investigate a call received by the ASP of a vehicle traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes of traffic on the interstate.
An investigation of the crash is underway.
Moomey has been with the state police for six years, according to the ASP press release.
