ALEXANDRIA, IN : Three people were injured in a head-on collision on Sunday, May 28, 2017
Three people were injured Sunday in a head-on collision near the intersection of Indiana 9 and Washington Street in Alexandria.
Alexandria police said an unidentified man was taken by air ambulance to St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis after the accident about 1:40 p.m. Jim and Nora Cleaver, of Alexandria, were taken to Community Hospital Anderson, where family members said they believe Nora Cleaver was being treated for a broken arm.
No other status information was available.
However, the collision was serious enough for the air bags to deploy.
Billy and Madison Backous reported driving southbound on Ind. 9 behind the unidentified man in a Volkswagen Jetta when it collided with the northbound Impala driven by Tim Cleaver.
“The silver car veered into the left lane little by little and collided head-on with the black Impala,” Madison Backous said.
“I’m not sure what he was doing,” Billy Backous said. "It was pretty bad. That guy was messed up.”
Billy Backous said he stopped after the accident to see what he could do to help.
“I just talked to the guys to keep them awake,” he said.
Shirley Farmer had just taken a phone call at her home in Gaston from her sister-in-law Nora Cleaver who said she and her husband were on their way to pick her up for her 80th birthday party when the phone rang again.
“They were calling us to say they were leaving the community center,” Farmer’s granddaughter, Stacie Farmer, said.
This time, it was Nora Cleaver telling her she and her husband had been in a serious accident.
Alexandria Police Assistant Chief Brian Burnett was on his way to CVS when he happened upon the scene.
“I just rolled up on it, and I just stepped up to see if I could help,” he said.
