A 23-year-old Narragansett man was taken to Rhode Island Hospital in Providence with serious injuries sustained in a motorcycle crash Tuesday in which he was pulled away from the burning motorcycle, the police said.
At about 4:45 p.m. Tuesday, a Narragansett police officer saw motorcyclist Jacob Clauson stopped at a traffic light on Narragansett Avenue, according to a police news release, and the officer knew Clauson to have a suspended driver’s license.
The officer followed the motorcycle north onto Boston Neck Road, activated the police cruiser’s lights. The police allege that Clauson turned and looked at the officer, revved the motorcycle engine, lifted the front wheel off the ground and sped away at high speed.
The officer lost sight of the motorcycle and did not pursue it. The officer soon saw that the motocycycle crashed near the Dune’s Club on Boston Neck Road, according to the police. The police said that witness statements indicated the motorcyclist tried to make a turn and lost control of the motorcycle, striking a curb and then a stone wall on the east side of the road. The crash threw Clauson from the motorcycle, the police release said.
The motorcycle caught fire after the accident. Clauson was pulled away from the burning motorcycle by a police officer, according to the police, was treated by Narragansett fire personnel at the scene and taken to the the hospital.
