MENNO, SD : Brandon man strikes oncoming vehicle in crash near Menno on Tuesday, July 25, 2017
Charges are pending against a Brandon man who authorities say fell asleep while driving and struck another vehicle Tuesday morning.
James Dibbet, 28, was driving westbound on Highway 18 near 437th Avenue, approximately six miles east of Menno, at 6:08 a.m. Tuesday when he fell asleep at the wheel, according to Hutchinson County Deputy Dan Schulte.
Dibbet's vehicle, a 2004 Honda Pilot, then crossed into the other lane and struck an oncoming 2000 Chevy pickup pulling an enclosed trailer.
Dibbet's vehicle continued into the south ditch and struck several trees in a shelter belt, Schulte said. The driver of the pickup — whose name is not being released because of Marsy's Law — was uninjured, and Dibbet sustained minor bruises and abrasions.
Schulte said both airbags were deployed on Dibbet's vehicle, which was completely totaled. The trailer attached to the pickup was also totaled, while the pickup had minor damage.
Both drivers were wearing seat belts.
