Memphis, TN : Bicyclist hit, killed in crash with SUV in Oakhaven area Thursday, August 4, 2016
A person on a bicycle was hit by an SUV near the intersection of Winchester Road and Bishops Bridge Road.
Many on-lookers who gathered in the area were concerned about everyone involved.
"I don't like to see anyone get killed to be honest," Oakhaven resident Dedra Richards said. "The other guy was probably on his way home from work or on his way to work who knows.”
"We're praying for the person who did it because they didn't set out to do that this morning," Oakhaven resident Brenda Ward said. "Unfortunately it has happened, but then I'm also praying for the young man that was hit."
Ward works in the area and had just finished her shift at FedEx.
"They drive through here like it's an expressway," Ward said.
The driver of the SUV, Melvin Campbell, stayed on the scene and was detained by police.
"I'm not saying that the guy who hit him was speeding, we don't know that, but most accidents are because everybody is trying to get somewhere fast," Ward said.
Memphis police shut down six lanes of traffic where the victim's body lie in the middle of the street for several hours as investigators worked to gather evidence. The 49-year-old victim was pronounced dead on the scene.
Police said the victim was wearing dark clothes and did not have a helmet on at the time of the crash.
Mario Herrera pulled up on his bike after hearing the news about the crash.
"I didn't see who it was, but I ride around here every day to catch the bus," Herrera said.
Campbell was arrested for an outstanding warrant and other charges stemming from the accident.
