Scottsdale ,AZ : One motorcyclist killed and another critically injured after collision with a car at Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard on Saturday afternoon ,March 28th 2015
Scottsdale police have identified the two motorcycle riders killed in a collision with a car Saturday.
Al Barela, 52, and his wife, 37-year-old Samantha Barela, were riding a motorcycle northbound on Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard around 1:15 p.m. Saturday when he reportedly ran a red light at Thunderbird Road. The motorcycle struck a Mercedes sedan, which was making a left turn at the intersection.
Al Barela was pronounced dead shortly after the crash. Scottsdale Police Sgt. Ben Hoster said Samantha Barela died at a hospital at 11:45 p.m.
The New Mexico residents were participating in the Torch Ride for Special Olympics, Hoster said.
According to Hoster, both riders were ejected and were not wearing helmets.
The driver of the car was not hurt.
Hoster said one motor officer rode ahead of the group and another behind. He said officers were also stationed at bigger intersections to prevent cross-traffic.
At this intersection, the lead officer reportedly led the group through a green light. Police said when the light turned red, three motorcycles stopped while the Barelas ran the red light at a high rate of speed.
Hoster said event organizers were advised to direct all participants to stop at all red lights where an officer was not present and to obey all traffic laws during the ride.
