Calvert County, MD : Motorist dies in a fatal accident on Thomas Johnson Bridge in Southern Maryland on Monday evening, February 16, 2015
Prince Frederick, Maryland
A motorist was killed Monday evening as snow fell on the Governor Thomas Johnson Bridge in Southern Maryland, Calvert County authorities said.
The driver of a Toyota Camry was traveling south on the bridge when she lost control of her car, skidded across the median and crashed into a man driving a Jeep in the northbound lane, said Capt. Todd Ireland of the Calvert County Sheriff’s Department. The bridge, which connects Calvert and Saint Mary’s counties, was closed for more than two hours after the crash, which occurred shortly after 6 p.m.
Ireland said both drivers were taken to MedStar Saint Mary’s Hospital, where the woman was pronounced dead. Her name is being withheld until her family can be notified. The driver of the Jeep was listed in stable condition.
The bridge was slick at the time of the accident, Ireland said. “Weather had to be a contributing factor, without doubt,” he said. The span was closed while state highway crews applied salt to the 1.5-mile span.
Built in 1977, the bridge has been a source of safety concerns because it carries two lanes of traffic with no shoulders. It rises to 135 feet above the Patuxent River and is known for being buffeted by high winds.
