Lubbock,TX : 2 injured, 1 arrested after multi-vehicle crash stemming from chase with stolen SUV on February, Thursday 8th 2018

Two people were injured, including a police officer, and one was arrested after a four-vehicle crash stemming from a chase with a stolen vehicle through Central Lubbock.
Around 9:40 a.m. Thursday, a man called Lubbock police saying he was following a vehicle he knew to have been stolen the night before, according to a news release from LPD spokeswoman Tiffany Pelt.

Investigators believe a woman, later identified as 24-year-old Denise Henderson, stole the white SUV vehicle Wednesday night and T-boned an unmarked police vehicle as she ran a stop sign while heading westbound on 42nd Street, Pelt said during a brief news conference at the scene.

The four vehicles involved include the white SUV, a black four-door car, a red SUV and a dark-colored pickup truck.

Officers initially caught up with the stolen vehicle at 66th Street and University Avenue., Pelt said.

“The suspect refused to pull over and a pursuit was initiated. During the pursuit, officers gathered information that identified the suspect,” the news release reads.

The pursuit was called off five minutes later, she said.

“At that point we felt that the risk outweighed the need to apprehend the suspect at that time since we did already have an identification and we could apprehend that suspect at a later time more safely,” Pelt said.

It’s unclear where the pursuit was called off, but it ended at 9:54 a.m., she said. The crash happened about five minutes later.

The female police officer and a passenger in the pickup suffered moderate and minor injuries and were taken to a Lubbock hospital by EMS, according to police.

“The police car was traveling northbound on Quaker and was struck on the passenger side by the suspect,” the news release reads. As a result, the pickup truck was also struck.”

Pelt later said Henderson refused treatment by EMS.

Debris was scattered across the road at the scene and obvious damage was observed on each of the four vehicles involved.

Pelt said the officer had been headed southbound on Quaker Avenue when the suspect struck her vehicle from the west.

At the scene, the suspect’s vehicle was observed facing northwest in the southbound lanes of Quaker, the red vehicle was facing south in the farthest southbound lane, the black car was facing east across both southbound lanes and the truck was facing southwest in the middle lane.

Henderson was arrested on charges of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, evading in a motor vehicle as well as other outstanding warrants, said Pelt. It is possible she will face additional charges.

Accident investigators were on scene for hours after the crash and had portions of Quaker Avenue completely blocked off into Thursday afternoon.
