Shelby, NC : Four people dead in Shelby wreck on Monday afternoon, June 13, 2016

Four people, three men and a woman, were found dead amidst the wreckage of car in deep kudzu off a roadway just north of Shelby Monday afternoon.

Troopers said from the condition of the bodies and the vehicle itself, it appeared the accident happened some time Sunday evening and happened so quickly, no one in the neighborhood took notice.

A passerby found the car Monday after lunch time.

"It's just a tragic thing," said North Carolina State Trooper John Burgin. He is still trying to piece together exactly what happened and why, but has not had much luck.

What he does know, he said, is that the woman was driving, the car was going above the 55 mph speed limit, and the car went off the roadway in a curve, striking a tree.

No one was wearing a seat belt, and two people were ejected from the car.

"It's quite possible that seat belts could have made a difference," said Burgin.

Investigators expect to positively identify all four victims by Monday evening. Then they will try to map out where the victims had been earlier on Sunday. They were all wearing swimsuits.

Anyone with information is urged to call the North Carolina Highway Patrol office in Shelby.
