CLAYTON, NC : Clayton chase ends in crash on US-70 Highway on Wednesday 3rd May 2023

A chase ended in a vehicle crash in Clayton after a driver fleeing from police rammed into another car late Wednesday morning, according to the Clayton Police Department.

On Wednesday around 11 a.m., police said a chase from Selma ended in a crash on Highway 70 near South Robertson Street in downtown Clayton. Officers said the crash closed the lanes in both directions after Hassan Gannaway, 20, ran a red light and hit Christie Latham, 51.

Clayton police said the Selma Police Department initiated a traffic stop, that Gannaway fled, through Wilson’s Mill and into Clayton. While fleeing, Gannaway is said to have reached speeds of up to 130 miles per hour.

“He (Gannaway) approached Robertson Street with a steady red light, proceeded into the intersection colliding with a white 2008 BMW 328I that was making the right turn onto US Hwy 70 Bus from Robertson Street,” Clayton police said.
