La Vergne, TN : 16-year-old junior and wrestler at Blackman High School killed in a crash on Interstate 24 East in La Vergne on Sunday morning, February 8, 2015

An accident on I-24 in Rutherford County killed a high school student and injured another early Sunday morning.

The accident occurred just after 2 a.m. in the eastbound lanes near the Waldron Road exit.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol said 16-year-old Daniel Winters was killed when the car he was riding in left the roadway, hit a rock wall and came to a rest on it’s roof.

Winters was a junior at Blackman High School in Murfreesboro where he was on the wrestling team.

The driver of the Toyota Scion, 18-year-old Michael Brobeck, suffered injuries but his condition is not known at this time. He also attends Blackman High School.

Neither student was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. The THP said charges are pending against Brobeck for vehicular homicide.

Hours before the crash both teenagers had solidified their spot in the state wrestling tournament.

A spokesman for Rutherford County Schools said extra counselors will be on hand at the school Monday to assist students.
