CONYERS, GA : Juvenile car thief crashes on I-20 on Wednesday, September 13, 2017
A juvenile who allegedly stole a vehicle caused a traffic jam on Interstate 20 West early Wednesday morning when he crashed the stolen vehicle. He was caught moments later when he ran by the Conyers Police Department just as shift change was going on.
The incident occurred as commuters began heading back to work in downtown Atlanta after suffering through two days of Tropical Storm Irma. The Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the car theft, but has not released any information.
The crash happened just before 6:30 a.m. on I-20 West just past the Ga. Highway 20/138 exit, shutting down two of the three lanes. The juvenile fled from the crash and jumped the fence between the interstate and Dogwood Drive in front of the Police Department. Sgt. Kim Lucas with Conyers Police said it happened during shift change and there were plenty of officers to help capture the suspect.
The crash shut down all but one lane on I-20 about 50 minutes, with the lanes reopening about 7:20 a.m.
Westbound I-20 has had its share of major shutdowns this week. On Monday afternoon, trees blew down onto the interstate between West Avenue and Sigman Road, causing one crash and shutting down westbound I-20 for about two hours while the accident and trees were cleared.
Late Tuesday morning, a tractor-trailer hit the center median on westbound I-20 just past the Ga. Highway 20/138 exit, then jackknifed and spilled gasoline onto the highway. The fuel caught fire, but was quickly extinguished, but both sides of I-20 were shut down for about an hour as debris from the median had spilled onto the eastbound lanes and the truck accident took up all of the westbound lanes.
