Thurmont, MD : Altus airman killed in bicycle accident on February, Sunday 11th 2018
An airman serving at Altus Air Force Base in Altus, Okla., was killed Sunday in a bicycle accident.
The active duty airman, whose identity was being withheld until 24 hours after the notification of his next of kin, was assigned to the 54th Refueling Squadron.
“It is the worst kind of tragedy when we lose a member of our Air Force family,” said Col. Eric Carney, 97th Wing commander in a press release. “Our thoughts and prayers will remain with the family during this process.
"We ask that the privacy of the family is respected as they grieve. Our top priority is ensuring the welfare of the family and friends affected by this tragedy.”
The cause of the accident is under investigation.
According to the press release, the 54th Air Refueling Squadron is the sole Air Education and Training Command KC-135R flying training squadron and provides KC-135R initial and advanced flight qualification.
As the tanker Formal Training Unit, the squadron's mission continues to encompass the training of all active duty, guard, reserve and international KC-135 crew members.
