Chester, PA : Niantic man charged for crashing into Chester house, fleeing on Thursday ,July 16th 2015
A Niantic man is facing charges after state police say he crashed a car into a Chester home early Thursday and then fled the scene on foot.
Steven Kellum, 24, was to appear in court later Thursday after the accident on Castle View Drive in Chester.
Troopers responded to 27 Castle View Drive around 1:15 a.m. after a neighbor reported seeing a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed from the Middlesex Turnpike, also known as Route 154, onto Castle View.
The neighbor also reported hearing the vehicle hit the home at 27 Castle View Drive.
The home sustained “moderate” damage and no one inside was hurt, state police said in a press release late Thursday morning.
The Chester Fire Marshal’s Office and building inspector were called to the scene to check the home.
Meanwhile, a trooper used a K9 to track down the driver of the car but was unsuccessful.
Kellum, who lives on Hillwood Drive in Niantic, was located at his home and arrested around 7:45 a.m. He was charged with evading responsibility and making an improper turn. State Police spokeswoman Trooper First Class Kelly Grant said in an email that Kellum’s bail was initially set at $1,500.
It was not immediately clear how Kellum got back to his home in Niantic. The car he was allegedly driving, a 2000 Chevrolet Malibu, is registered to an East Haddam woman. It was not immediately clear how Kellum knows her.
The car was towed from the scene with front-end damage.
