HUMBOLDT, IA : Ice, snow to blame for Humboldt accident on Monday, January 30th 2017
Ice- and snow-covered roads contributed to a head-on collision in Humboldt County that injured a woman and seriously hurt a man Friday night on U.S. Highway 169 south of Humboldt, according to Dean Kruger, Humboldt County sheriff.
The accident was reported about 8 p.m.
Carlo Daniel Agustin-Pedro, 29, of Humboldt, was traveling southbound in a 2000 Saturn car.
Shelly Paulson, 48, of Dakota City, was traveling northbound in a 2013 Lincoln SUV.
Paulson was reportedly following another vehicle as it pulled over on the east side of the road.
When that vehicle pulled over, Paulson saw Agustin-Pedro’s vehicle cross the center line, heading towards her.
Paulson swerved before the two vehicles collided, Kruger reported.
Agustin-Pedro’s car ended up near the center of the road, while Paulson’s vehicle ended up partially in the east ditch.
Both vehicles sustained significant front-end damage.
Traffic was backed up for about an hour while firefighters worked to rescue Agustin-Pedro, who was pinned inside of his vehicle.
Agustin-Pedro was transported to Humboldt County Memorial Hospital before being airlifted to an undisclosed Des Moines hospital.
The extent of Agustin-Pedro’s injuries were unknown as of Monday night.
Paulson was also transported to Humboldt County Memorial Hospital.
Paulson’s injuries are believed to be non-life-threatening, Kruger reported.
Both drivers were wearing seat belts.
The Humboldt County sheriff’s office, Humboldt Police Department, Humboldt Volunteer Fire Department and Humboldt County Memorial Hospital Ambulance were on scene.
