The news director of a public radio station in Jonesboro died late Tuesday night after his vehicle ran off the road and hit a tree, police said.

It happened about 10:40 p.m. at Arkansas 91 and County Road 101 just west of Jonesboro.

According to a preliminary Arkansas State Police report, 63-year-old William Gregory Chance was driving a 2003 Ford west on Arkansas 91 when the vehicle veered off the south side of the highway and hit a tree.

Chance was news director for Arkansas State University public radio station KASU.

The station said on its Facebook page that Chance "died of an apparent heart attack" while behind the wheel.

"The management and staff of KASU would like to extend our sincerest sympathies to [Chance's wife] Cindy and to all of Greg's friends and colleagues in the Jonesboro community," the statement said. "He will be missed."

Chance had worked at the station since 1982.

The fatality was one of two reported to state police Tuesday that raised the total number of road-accident deaths so far this year to 138.
