Tulsa, OK : Owasso teacher dies after rear-end collision on U.S. 169 on Sunday, May 15, 2016

An Owasso Public Schools teacher who was injured in a rear-end crash along a stretch of highway in Owasso on Sunday died in a hospital Monday.

Bobbi White was driving south on U.S. 169 near 76th Street North when traffic became backed up because of construction on the bridges near 66th Street North, said Jason Woodruff, deputy chief of the Owasso Police Department.

That’s when 51-year-old Scott Alan Smith reportedly “failed to notice” cars had slowed or stopped in front of him and slammed into the back of White’s car and another vehicle, Woodruff said.

In total, seven people were taken to the hospital following the crash. White was taken to the hospital in critical condition, and the others in serious condition, Woodruff said.
White was pronounced dead Monday.

Woodruff was unsure how many passengers were in each car during the collision.
Smith was among those hospitalized after the crash. He was cited with driving under suspension and reckless driving.

Because the collision is now a traffic fatality, investigators will send the results of the report to the Tulsa County District Attorney’s Office. Prosecutors will then determine whether to file charges against Smith in White’s death, Woodruff said.

White was an English teacher at Owasso’s Mid-High School. She’d been with the district since the 2014-15 school year and worked there as a special education paraprofessional while she completed her teaching degree, said Dr. Amy Fichtner, the school district’s assistant superintendent.

She taught at Union Public Schools during the 2013-14 academic year, Fichtner said.
Owasso Mid-High School principal Don Huggins released a statement about White on Monday saying, “Miss White was a kind and caring teacher. She was a teacher who was very well-liked by her students.”

Owasso officers have responded to at least six collisions in the bridge construction area in the past two months. Four of those crashes resulted in injuries, Woodruff said.

“There’s a tendency for cars to slow down and back up when they’re going into those zones, and people need to pay attention and realize that they may have to come to an unexpected stop or an unexpected slow-down,” he said.
