Los Angeles, CA : 1 person dead and 4 injured after five-vehicle crash on Interstate 210 offramp in Los Angeles on Friday, April 17, 2015

Authorities say one person is dead and four injured — at least one critically — after a big-rig barreled off a Los Angeles freeway and smashed into cars.

The tractor-trailer plowed down an Interstate 210 offramp in Pacoima and crashed into vehicles stopped at an intersection shortly after 6:30 a.m. Friday.

California Highway Patrol Officer Ming Hsu says the driver claimed he had a coughing fit on the freeway and lost control.

The truck hit an SUV and a car stopped at a stop sign, then hit a pickup truck and pushed it into a dump truck.

The pickup's driver, a man in his 30s, died at the scene.

Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey says one person was critically injured and three appeared to have serious injuries.
