Sebewaing, MI : 1 dead in fiery crash on M-59 in Pontiac on Tuesday morning, January 3, 2017

One person was killed Tuesday morning in Pontiac following a fiery crash on eastbound M-59 involving at least two vehicles, the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office reported.

According to the sheriff’s office, deputies and Waterford Regional Fire Department personnel were called at 6:03 a.m. to eastbound M-59 near Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard with the multi-vehicle accident and finding one vehicle burning with people trapped in their vehicles.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze, and they found the one man dead.

An unidentified male, operating a 2002 Chevrolet Trailblazer on westbound M-59, lost control of the vehicle and crossed the grass median, entering the eastbound lane. The vehicle was struck by an eastbound 2014 Cadillac ATS and a 2016 Chrysler 200, officials are stating.

The Chevrolet Trailblazer caught fire in the eastbound lane. That unidentified driver was trapped, according to officials, and was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver’s identity is being withheld until a positive identification is made.

The passenger, a 24-year-old Clinton Township resident, exited the vehicle and was pulled away by witnesses on the scene and is in stable condition.

The driver of the Cadillac ATS, 46 and a resident of Howell, was seriously injured, extricated by the Waterford Regional Fire Department and is listed in serious condition.

The driver of the Chrysler 200, 44 and a resident of Brighton, was also injured and has since been treated and released.

Initial investigations show alcohol does not appear to have been a factor in the crash and all involved were wearing seatbelts. The crash is still under investigation by the sheriff’s Crash Reconstruction Unit.

Eastbound M-59 was closed in the area for several hours as crash investigators were on the scene.

WDIV reported that the road was reopened around 10 a.m.
