Grand Junction ,MN : Bicyclist dies in downtown Grand Junction crash on Monday ,June 29th 2015
The Grand Junction Police Department said no charges are anticipated after a bicyclist was killed in a crash that closed a downtown intersection for several hours on Monday morning.
At 10:35 a.m., witnesses said a bicyclist, a man who was described to be in his 20s, was headed north on Seventh Street at a high rate of speed before he was hit by a westbound pickup on Ute Avenue.
Dianna Ward said she saw the man tossed some 30 feet in the air before landing on the sidewalk at the southwest corner of the intersection.
The bicyclist crossed two lanes of westbound Ute Avenue traffic before being hit by a truck barrelling down in the far right lane.
Another witness, Jim Martin, said westbound traffic had the green light.
“(The rider) was trying to beat the red (light),” Martin said at the scene.
Early investigation confirmed that the rider likely disregarded a red light at the intersection, said police Sgt. Dave Stassen. While charges were not anticipated, an investigation continues, he said.
Don Ehmann said he was some distance east of the intersection, on Ute Avenue, at the time of the crash as he watched the rider zip into harm’s way.
“It was like watching a train wreck,” he said.
When firefighters walked the short distance to the intersection, a bystander was already performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation on the rider, police said.
The man died at a local hospital.
Ute Avenue was closed between Eighth and Sixth streets, and Seventh Street was closed between Pitkin and Colorado avenues for investigation. The streets reopened at 1 p.m.
