Augusta, ME : Gray man dies in snowmobile accident in Windham on Monday, January 2nd 2017
A Gray man was killed Monday morning in a snowmobile accident in Windham.
The first snowmobile fatality of the 2016-17 winter season occurred around 10:20 a.m. on a trail that runs along power lines from Falmouth Road to Route 302.
Angus McDuffie, 44, of Dutton Hill Road was pronounced dead at the scene after the snowmobile he was driving got stuck while crossing a small brook and he was ejected from the machine, said Sgt. Jason Luce of the Maine Warden Service.
McDuffie was wearing a helmet, Luce said. The state Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the cause of death.
Three friends following McDuffie on snowmobiles stopped, tried to revive McDuffie, and then called 911, Luce said.
Windham police and fire-rescue personnel also responded and assisted in the investigation.
Luce warned other winter trail riders to watch out for exposed rocks, sticks and ice that is not fully formed on lakes and streams.
“It’s still early in the season and even though we’ve had a big snowstorm, there’s still a lot of exposed hazards on trails,” Luce said.
