Augusta, ME : A double fatal accident on Route 26 on Tuesday, July 25, 2017
Oxford Police are investigating a double fatal accident on Route 26 that happened just shy of 11 p.m. Tuesday night in the roadway between the Oxford Casino and the Hampton Inn across the street.
Oxford Police Chief Jon Tibbetts confirmed late Tuesday night that the accident between a pickup truck and two pedestrians was a "confirmed double fatality."
"It looks like they were crossing the road," Tibbetts said.
According to Tibbetts, the pedestrians, both men, were crossing Route 26 from the casino to the hotel when they were struck by the truck traveling northbound.
The vehicle stopped on the scene and the driver was being cooperative, Tibbetts said.
Tibbetts could not say for sure late Tuesday whether there was more than one person in the pickup truck. No one involved in the incident is being identified at this time, Tibbetts said, pending notification of the families.
Just prior to 11 p.m. Tuesday night, police and fire officials in Oxford closed part of Route 26 after the initial call for service.
Route 26 was closed from its intersection with Route 121, also known as Mechanic Falls Road, and Rabbit Valley Road, just south of the Oxford Casino.
Oxford police and Oxford fire responded to the call, and Lifeflight was dispatched to the scene from its base at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston almost immediately. A Lifeflight helicopter landed on Route 26 near the casino, where initially it was to transport one of the pedestrians struck.
