Monroe, LA : Oak Grove man dies in Goodwill wreck on Friday morning, March 3, 2017

An unrestrained man died Friday morning after the vehicle he was driving ran off the road and overturned.

Shortly after 6:15 a.m., Louisiana State Police Troop F responded to a single-vehicle crash on LA-585 south of Goodwill in West Carroll Parish.

The preliminary investigation revealed a 2006 Hummer H3, driven by 58-year-old Randy Abernathy of Oak Grove, was traveling westbound. For unknown reasons, the vehicle traveled off the right side of the road and entered a ditch and began to overturn.

Abernathy became trapped inside the vehicle as it was overturning, and he was pronounced dead at the scene by the West Carroll Parish Coroner’s Office.

Routine toxicology samples were obtained and will be submitted for analysis.

Troopers wish to remind motorists of the importance of seatbelt use. Louisiana law requires that every person in a motor vehicle, regardless of seating position, always remain buckled up. Statistics show that the chances of surviving a violent crash rise significantly when properly restrained. Taking the time to buckle up before every trip is the single most effective thing you can do to protect yourself in a crash.

In 2017, Troop F has investigated six fatal crashes resulting in six deaths.
