One person is dead following a traffic crash involving a personalized motor scooter near the entrance to a shopping plaza in Palm Bay, officials report. The victim was identified as 78-year-old James William Smith.

The incident was reported about 8:00 a.m. at Palm Bay Road and Bottlebrush Drive after police said the crash was caused after a pedestrian crossed the street, outside of the cross walk and failed to yield to the right of way of the oncoming vehicle. Smith was pronounced dead at the scene, officials said. The area where the accident took place is several yards from the former Palm Bay Fire Station 1 location, about half a mile west of Lipscomb Street. Several police officers were at the site. The roadway opened several hours later.
