A Manchester, New Hampshire man died Tuesday evening after the 2009 Ford Focus he was driving struck the rear end of a Massachusetts Department of Transportation help van flatbed tow truck in the left travel lane of Interstate 93, state police said.
The operator of the Focus, Shannon Jackson, 27, was transported by Lifeflight to Boston Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. The driver of the help van was not injured, state police said.
The Eagle-Tribune reported Wednesday that the help van driver was seriously injured.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation but speed is believed to be a factor, state police said.
Preliminary investigation by Trooper Jared Clemenzi of the Andover barracks indicates the Ford Focus was traveling on Interstate 93 southbound when it rear-ended the help van, which was assisting with a minor crash in the left lane of the highway, state police said.
Clemenzi is being aided in this investigation by the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction and Crime Scene Services sections. Also helping at the scene of the crash were the Andover Fire Department, Methuen Rescue and MassDOT.
The accident was reported at 6:20 p.m. It happened just before exit 44, which connects Interstate 93 to Interstate 495.
