LEIGHTON, AL : A Colbert County woman was killed and a man in her car was injured in a one-car crash on Sunday, December, 3rd 2017
Authorities said a Colbert County woman was killed and a man in her car was injured in a one-car crash early Sunday morning.
Troopers said Kabreshia Ticole Smith, 24, Leighton, was killed in the crash that was reported to Colbert County 911 at 4:30 a.m. Sunday.
Cpl. Bill Burke of the Alabama Law Enforcement's Quad-Cities State Troopers Post said the accident happened on Alabama 184, which is also known as Second Street, two miles east of Muscle Shoals.
Colbert County Coroner Justin Gasque pronounced Smith death at the scene.
Burke said a passenger in the car, Joshua Turner, 26, of Hamilton, was taken to Helen Keller Hospital in Sheffield where he was treated and later released.
Reports indicate Smith was driving a 2005 Mercury Grand Marquis.
Emergency personnel at the scene said it appeared Smith was traveling west on Alabama 184 when the car went off the north side of the roadway and hit a tree.
Officials said it appeared the car slid and slammed into the tree with most of the impact coming on the driver's side.
Gasque said it was evident by the looks of the car that Smith took a severe hit upon impact.
He said the impact caused her to have multiple blunt-force trauma.
One emergency person at the scene said the impact was so severe she was likely critically injured upon impact.
Burke said the crash was just west of where Bainbridge Loop intersects with Alabama 184.
Firefighters and emergency medical personnel from three Colbert County volunteer fire departments — Leighton, Nitrate City and Brick-Hatton — were called to work the accident.
Sunday's fatality is the 44th traffic fatality in the Northwest Alabama region and southern Tennessee counties of Wayne and Lawrence so far this year.
It is the first fatality in December.
