A motorcyclist was killed in a crash with a minivan on Route 70 in Whiting, police said Sunday.The driver of a Chrysler Pacifica attempted to make a left turn to a Wawa from Route 70 westbound, near County Road 539, when the minivan struck a Yamaha Royal ST motorcycle, which was headed eastbound on the roadway around 8:45 p.m. Saturday, according to Manchester police Capt. Todd Malland.
The motorcyclist, identified as 59-year-old Gary Quatrano of Neptune, died from his injuries at an area hospital, authorities said. An investigation found Quatrano did not properly secure his helmet chin strap, causing it to come off at impact.
The Chrysler driver, a 25-year-old Toms River woman, was treated for minor injuries at a local hospital, the captain said in a statement.
Patrolman Thomas O'Hare of the Manchester police Traffic Safety Unit was investigating the wreck.
