Greenville, SC : Dozens of wrecks in Anderson County this morning, one was fatal on Tuesday, January, 9th 2018
Greenville, South Carolina
One person died Tuesday as black ice and thick fog contributed to dozens of morning wrecks in the Upstate.
Anderson County Coroner Greg Shore said driving was trecherous in parts of the county.
The fatal wreck happened at South Carolina 28 South near High Shoals Road, Shore said.
The man was identified as 63-year-old William Michael Fowler of Anderson, Shore said.
The wreck happened around 6:40 a.m. and involved only the Kia sedan, which went off the right side of the road, trapping the driver, who was not wearing a seat belt, said Lance Cpl. Justin Sutherland of the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol's wreck tracking website listed at least 28 wrecks in Anderson County from 5:45 a.m. to about 10 a.m., with more than 40 other wrecks in Greenville, Spartanburg, Oconee and Pickens counties.
Trooper Joe Hovis of the South Carolina Highway Patrol said the total number of wrecks was high but not unheard of, although he noted there were more than the typical concentration of wrecks in Anderson, Pickens and Oconee counties.
Hovis said black ice and foggy conditions appeared to be contributing factors to at least some of the accidents.
