Tucson, AZ : Young boy struck by a vehicle and killed on South Kolb Road on Wednesday night, February 11, 2015
Tucson police have released the name of a 5-year-old boy killed after he darted into traffic and was struck by a vehicle Wednesday night on the southeast side.
A police officer gave aid to Alaa Mahmad, but the child was pronounced dead at the scene, said Sgt. Pete Dugan, a Tucson Police Department spokesman.
Shortly after 8:30 p.m., a patrol officer traveling on South Kolb Road, just south of East 22nd Street came upon the scene, Dugan said.
Once the officer realized a child was struck, the incident was reported and the officer rendered aid to the boy, Dugan said.
The driver of the vehicle that struck the child remained on scene. No citations were issued.
Traffic detectives said that the preliminary investigation showed that a family, consisting of the parents and their two young children, were leaving a nearby grocery store. The father was carrying the grocery bags, while the mother walked behind him with the children.
Witnesses said that the family was crossing Kolb Road outside of a the crosswalk, which was several yards away at the traffic signal.
When the father had almost reached the other side of the road, Alaa broke free from his mother, darted across the median into northbound traffic and was struck, Dugan said.
There have been two pedestrian fatalities in Tucson this year.
